Recipient - Tom Mathews
“The Bear”
"I have been a partner to Tom Mathews in our accounting firm, Grandizio, Wilkins Mathews and Little. Unexpectedly and suddenly we lost Tom earlier this year. During these last few months of visiting with clients and others, we have come to realize his impact to a much higher level of appreciation. Tom’s impact was not constrained to just a professional touch, but he also shared himself humbly for others and community. Simply, Tom was a good friend and partner to me. He was also a very trusted advisor and friend to many of his clients. Everyone has and will for some time to come, feel the sting of the sudden unexplained loss of someone before their time. The impact on our community is also very apparent and will be for some time to come. The investments of time he extended in many different areas from the firm and its clients, to the Country Club of Maryland to the Towson Elks. He touched many people. Tom was an avid golfer. There is no shortage of “Bear” stories when it comes to golf and socializing. Who can forget his “fade away” putting style? He has been a significant part of the Community Cup from its inception in 2006 and this event and its important mission were of vital importance to him personally. Roger Kaufman, a dear friend and Community Cup partner said simply “Tom was a great and genuine person. I love him and I miss him terribly, but he left me full of great memories that I will forever cherish.”
The Community Cup introduced at this year’s 2012 event “The Bear”-Memorial Team Putting Event in honor and recognition of Tom and his dedication to serving others. We will miss you friend, but you will be remembered each year at the Community Cup and the stories and your spirit will flow as smoothly as one of your trademark putts!"
